Remote education provision: information for parents

This information is intended to provide clarity and transparency to pupils and parents or carers about what to expect from remote education if local restrictions require entire cohorts (or bubbles) to remain at home.

The remote curriculum: what is taught to pupils at home

A pupil's first day or two of being educated remotely might look different from our standard approach, while we take all the necessary actions to prepare for a longer period of remote teaching.

What should my child expect from immediate remote education in the first day or two of pupils being sent home?

Teachers will email home a body of work at the earliest possible opportunity. This will be based upon the curriculum that the children in school are learning and be as similar in format as possible. If you do not have access to a printer or would prefer a paper format, we can arrange for a pack to be placed at a safe place at home.

Following the first few days of remote education, will my child be taught broadly the same curriculum as they would if they were in school?

We teach the same curriculum remotely as we do in school.

Remote teaching and study time each day

How long can I expect work set by the school to take my child each day?

We expect that remote education (including remote teaching and independent work) will take pupils in KS1 broadly three hours each day and broadly four hours each day.

Phonics	Daily phonics lesson.
Maths	Daily maths lessons
Story and Topic	Daily topic activity related to a weekly story.
Other	Weekly Skype/Facetime calls one to one if requested. List of apps, websites, fine motor activities to be sent out.

Phonics	An online pre-recorded phonics speed sound lesson will be available each day for your child. These will be available for each of the Year 1 phonics groups and your child’s class teacher will be able to tell you which group they are in so that you can access an appropriate lesson for your child.
Reading	Children will be sent with approximately four home reading books. Additional books including oxford reading tree and Read Write Inc books are available on Oxford Owl; https://www.oxfordowl.co.uk/
Writing	We will set super sentence style writing challenges with a picture prompt. The key focus for these super sentences will be using Capital letters, finger spaces, listening for sounds and full stops.
Maths	An online pre-recorded Power Math lesson will be available each day for your child. Your child will be able to take home their Power Math books however these MUST be returned to school once the lockdown or isolation is over.
Knowledge (Geography, History, Science, RE)	The current knowledge-based activities that the children are focusing on in class will be shared. These will be paper based (in packs and available via email). Online quizzes will be available so children can share their learning with their class teacher and receive feedback. We may use video content (such as Oak Academy) if we feel that this supports the Ling Moor curriculum.
Creativity (Art, Music, Design & technology)	Creative challenges will be shared via email and as part of the learning pack. These activities will be challenges that the children can complete independently and using resources from home. Any completed work should be brought back into school at the end of the closure period to add to each child’s portfolio.
Teacher contact	15-20 mins Story sessions each day on Teams- 10 children at a time and a quick catch up, how are you all, how are you getting on with your work etc? Email contact when needed. Phone calls if needed.

Subject	Learning available
Reading	Children to be sent home with appropriate RWI book bag books and encouraged to use activities in the back of the books. Parents also signposted to Oxford Owl to find same level of phonics-based reading books. For those children reading other books, they will also be sent home with some and signposted the appropriate area of Oxford Owl.
Writing	Recorded lesson by one of Y2 teachers setting up a follow up task, ideally in writing books.
Maths	Recorded lesson by one of Y2 teachers using Power Maths materials. Children to follow up using their Power Maths books. Answers provided to check at home - parents able to email difficulties/queries.
Knowledge (Geography, History, Science, RE)	History and geography to be a mixture of paper-based tasks and online quizzes. Relevant material e.g. BBC bitesize to be used where appropriate.
Creativity (Art, Music, Design & technology)	Creative challenges will be shared via email
Teacher contact	Live story time and conversation led by class teacher each day. Open for children to join on whichever days they can but suggest twice a week is sufficient but choose the most appropriate days.

Reading	The children will be sent home with their BookBlog book each day. We will encourage the children to make sure that their current book has lots of reading left. Children will be able to access BookBlog throughout. We will also be asking the children to complete comprehension activities and sheets. The answers to these will be provided for the children to self-assess something that they are expert at doing.
Writing	An online ‘Talk for Writing’ session with one of the Year 3 class teachers will be available each day. This pre-recorded lesson will set up a learning task for the children to complete. The writing session the next day will follow on from this task. Ideally, the children will complete their writing in their writing books.
Maths	An online ‘Power Maths’ session with one of the Year 3 class teachers will be available each day. This pre-recorded lesson will set up a learning task for the children to complete. Ideally, the children will have access to their Power Maths workbook to complete the learning with a challenge question shared as well.
Knowledge (Geography, History, Science, RE)	The current knowledge based activities that the children are focusing on in class will be shared. These will be paper based (in packs and available via email). Online quizzes will be available so children can share their learning with their class teacher and receive feedback. We may use video content (such as Oak Academy) if we feel that this supports the Ling Moor curriculum.
Creativity (Art, Music, Design & technology)	Creative challenges will be shared via email and as part of the learning pack. These activities will be challenges that the children can complete independently and using resources from home. Any completed work should be brought back into school at the end of the closure period to add to each child’s portfolio.
Teacher contact	We will be using Microsoft Teams to interact with the children each day. These meetings will be live sessions at a set time and they will not be a lesson. The aim of the session is to check up on progress and to give the children feedback.
Feedback	During any period of closure, we really do want to receive the children’s learning. We will be using the online quizzes and email to receive any questions or completed work the children would like to share

We will also be asking the children to complete comprehension activities related to the class reading book which will be read to them by one of the year 4 class teachers as a pre-recorded video each week/chapter. The answers to these will be provided for the children to self-assess something that they are expert at doing.
Writing	An online ‘Talk for Writing’ session with one of the Year 4 class teachers will be available each day. This pre-recorded lesson will set up a learning task for the children to complete. Ideally, the children will be sent home with a home writing literacy book.
Maths	An online ‘Power Maths’ session with one of the Year 4 class teachers will be available each day. This pre-recorded lesson will set up a learning task for the children to complete. Ideally, the children will have access to their Power Maths workbook to complete the learning with a challenge question shared as well.
Knowledge (Geography, History, Science, RE)	The current knowledge based activities that the children are focusing on in class will be shared. These will be paper based (in packs and available via email). Online quizzes will be available so children can share their learning with their class teacher and receive feedback. We may use video content (such as Oak Academy) if we feel that this supports the Ling Moor curriculum.
Creativity (Art, Music, Design & technology)	Creative challenges will be shared via email and as part of the learning pack. The answers to these will be provided for the children to self-assess something that they are expert at doing.
Writing	An online ‘Writing / GAPS’ session with one of the Year 6 class teachers will be available each day. This pre-recorded lesson will set up a learning task for the children to complete, which will follow our curriculum overview. Our daily spelling practice sheets, will also be sent home for the children to complete alongside practice on Spelling Shed. Key pieces will be asked to be shared with the class teacher via email for feedback.
Maths	An online ‘Maths’ session with one of the Year 6 class teachers will be available each day. This pre-recorded lesson will set up a learning task for the children to complete, which will follow our curriculum overview. Answer sheets will be given to allow the children to self-assess.
Knowledge and Creativity (Geography, History, Science, RE, PSHE, Art and DT)	The current knowledge-based activities that the children are focusing on in class will be shared. These will be paper based planned activities for the children to complete. Online quizzes, where appropriate, will be available, so children can share their learning with their class teacher and receive feedback.
Teacher contact	We will be using Microsoft Teams to interact with the children. These meetings will be live sessions with a small group at a set time (different days for different groups 1x a week for 30 minutes). The aim of these sessions will be: to check in with the pupils in each group, to see how everybody is and to allow social interaction between them.
Feedback	During any period of closure, we really do want to receive the children’s learning. We will be using the online quizzes and email to receive any questions or completed work that the children would like to share.

Accessing remote education

How will my child access any online remote education you are providing?

Links to pre-recorded clips will be emailed to parents alongside a weekly timetables. For older children, Teams can be used to share learning and deliver live events. In EYFS, Tapestry will be used.

If my child does not have digital or online access at home, how will you support them to access remote education?

Our home learning offer is designed as we recognise that some pupils may not have suitable online access at home. We take the following approaches to support those pupils to access remote education:

All children have access to a paper based learning pack (including textbooks and workbooks).*
Laptops and ipads are available for home use for those who do not have access to devices.*
Wifi dongles are available for those who have limited internet access
Pupils are welcome to return the completed learning. If learning is returned, teachers will be in a position to give written feedback and/or make a call home.

How will my child be taught remotely?

We use a combination of the following approaches to teach pupils remotely:

recorded teaching (e.g. Oak National Academy lessons, video/audio recordings made by teachers)
printed paper packs produced by teachers (e.g. workbooks, worksheets)
textbooks and reading books pupils have at home
commercially available websites supporting the teaching of specific subjects or areas, including video clips or sequences
long-term project work and/or internet research activities (as per the schools full opening guidance, schools full opening guidance, schools are expected to avoid an over-reliance on these approaches)

Engagement and feedback

What are your expectations for my child’s engagement and the support that we as parents and carers should provide at home?

Our parents have and always will be our children’s greatest teachers. The focus of a period of home learning must be keeping safe alongside remaining mentally and physically well. If expectations of home learning begin to feel overwhelming, parents are urged to contact lingmoorenquiries@prioryacademies.co.uk

The Academy expects all families who children are not attending face to face education to access remote education. The Academy has established an accessible system for sharing learning and there are clear strategies in place to promote engagement as well as communication with parents. The weekly timetable is the starting point for each class.

Communication is key during any period of home learning and we would encourage parents to contact the Academy with any questions. This can be either done through the lingmoorenquiries@prioryacademies.co.uk address, via a telephone call to the front desk or a direct email to your child’s class teacher. The address will be made available to you upon request.

Whilst we would encourage parents to maintain routines for their children which foster good learning habits, we recognise that many parents will be working from home and, therefore, have provided a flexible approach to learning that can be accessed throughout the day. Teaching staff will monitor email and other forms of feedback between 8.30am and 4pm.

How will you check whether my child is engaging with their work and how will I be informed if there are concerns?

Teachers will be requesting feedback through completed learning tasks emailed to them, the completion of online quizzes and through attendance at live meetings. If the Academy has any concerns, parents will be emailed or called by the class teacher.

How will you assess my child’s work and progress?

Feedback can take many forms and may not always mean extensive written comments for individual children. For example, whole-class feedback or quizzes marked automatically via digital platforms are also valid and effective methods, amongst many others. Our approach to feeding back on pupil work will be through weekly live meetings, comments emailed home about completed learning and most importantly the design of the future learning to address misconceptions.

Additional support for pupils with particular needs

How will you work with me to help my child who needs additional support from adults at home to access remote education?

We recognise that some pupils, for example some pupils with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), may not be able to access remote education without support from adults at home. We acknowledge the difficulties this may place on families, and we will work with parents and carers to support those pupils. For those pupils who are on the SEND register, Mrs Elms will be in direct communication with you. Class teachers will be calling children who are on the SEND register to ensure that parents are comfortable with the provision and to understand the need for individual support.

Remote education for self-isolating pupils

Where individual pupils need to self-isolate but the majority of their peer group remains in school, how remote education is provided will likely differ from the approach for whole groups. This is due to the challenges of teaching pupils both at home and in school.

If my child is not in school because they are self-isolating, how will their remote education differ from the approaches described above?
